OLD VINE RED

Old Vine Red is a proprietary red wine made to replicate the field blends of many of the old vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Predominantly comprised of Zinfandel, Old Vine Red combines pure fruit, a supple mouth feel and a rich, solid structure. A groundbreaking combination of varietals and multiple vintages first produced in 1982, this wine has blazed the path for red blends for decades. With a historic underground following, it is one of the longest lasting and best known red blends produced today.

Marietta’s flagship NV Old Vine Red Lot Number 66 is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the plummy red fruit and floral notes retain their freshness. Bright red cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and sweet pipe tobacco give this fresh, vinous red much of its inviting personality.

Family Series

2015 ROMAN

Our winemaking is based on a unique blend of tradition and innovation, however, the backbone to everything that we do is hard work. Román Cisneros, our Cellar Master and employee of thirty years, embodies the heart and commitment that creates our wines. This Zinfandel is from our vineyards in Alexander Valley, McDowell Valley and the Yorkville Highlands.  Made in Román’s favorite style, it is rich and lush with powerful structure.  He unknowingly was instrumental in the blending and production of this wine.  Before learning what the wine was to be named, he told us that it had replaced Christo as his new favorite house wine.

The 2015 Román is a gorgeous, Zinfandel-based red. Bright, plump and exuberant, the 2015 offers striking depth as well as freshness. This is an incredibly delicious, inviting wine. Even better, it is a tremendous value. Petite Syrah and Barbera round out the blend. Succulent red berry, spice, leather and floral notes add to the wine’s silky personality.

2014 CHRISTO

This intense, powerful Syrah-based wine is grown mostly on our McDowell Valley property which has a long history of championing Rhone varietals. Co-fermented with Viognier, the Syrah expresses violet, tar, and rich earth.  Petite Sirah from Alexander Valley brings chewy bitter chocolate, while Grenache grown at 1400 feet elevation in the Yorkville highlands keeps the wine bright and juicy.  Full-bodied and fleshy, this wine is dark and brooding yet silky and smooth.

The 2014 Christo, Marietta’s Rhône blend, is bold, racy and juicy, all qualities that make it hard to resist. The Christo is the most exuberant and flamboyant of these reds. The blend is mostly Syrah, with some Petite Sirah, Grenache and Viognier. Sage, tobacco, menthol and licorice wrap around the juicy, exuberant finish.

2014 ARMÉ

Marietta’s husband, Armé, lived, worked and fished throughout Alexander Valley, the Yorkville Highlands and the McDowell Valley.  From our vineyards in those same valleys, we combine the best of what these sites offer to create a unique Cabernet Sauvignon.  This approachable but incredibly serious wine is representative of excellent site selection possible only through covering miles of ground and constant thought and exploration. Like Armé, this wine is refined with a slightly traditional style, it is also robust, rich and fruit forward: evocative of modern Californian winemaking.

A bold, pungent wine, the 2014 Armé offers a decidedly old school-influenced profile of dark stone fruit, black olive, herb, tobacco and licorice. Cool and savory, but with considerable depth, the 2014 Armé is another knock-out wine from Scot Bilbro. Readers looking for a value-priced California Cabernet will flip out over this wine. This is a very serious wine for the money.

2015 ANGELI

Marietta Cellars sits in the entrance to a small canyon off Alexander Valley.  Known as Angeli Ranch after the family who originally settled here in 1886, this property’s vineyards connect gravel swales from the Russian River to terraced knolls invisible from the valley floor.  The extremes of this site create a wine that is powerful but has surprising elegance and clarity.  This gorgeous Zinfandel is intensified by small additions of Petite Sirah and Syrah all grown here on the estate surrounding the winery.

The 2015 Angeli is a Zinfandel from estate vineyards in Alexander Valley. Earthy undertones give the wine its distinct, savory expression of Zinfandel, with plenty of cedar, tobacco, licorice and herb nuances. Medium on body and restrained for a California Zinfandel, the Angeli hits all the right notes. There is plenty of depth, but more freshness than in the past.

2014 GIBSON BLOCK

The Gibson Block is the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA.  It is planted with some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache in California.  This ancient, dry farmed mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. Reflecting the hidden property where it is grown, this Syrah is quiet, obscure and profound.  This wine is limited in production due to this unique grape source.  The wine is built to enjoy with food and will age at least a decade and only increase in subtleness and complexity.

The 2014 Estate Syrah Gibson Block, a Syrah-based field blend, exudes depth and concentration. Black cherry, blackberry, cloves, leather and licorice give the wine its inner sweetness and textural richness, but there is also plenty of aromatic freshness and lift. Violet, camphor, savory herb and scorched earth give the wine a real sense of gravitas.

2014 GAME TRAIL

This south-facing vineyard is perched at 1400 feet of elevation overlooking the Yorkville Highlands.  Coastal influence, warm days and rocky hillsides combine to create a Cabernet Sauvignon with extraordinary intensity and clarity.  Wild boar, deer and mountain lion create game trails that encircle the vineyard and guide us into the woods while hunting wild Porcini and Chanterelle mushrooms.  Much like the air out at the Yorkville ranch, this wine is fresh and bright.  With more acidity and focus on red fruit flavors than most Cabernet, this wine is sizable and will age for decades, but has a gorgeous, perfumed elegance that is accessible now.

An addition to the range, the Game Trail is 100% Cabernet from the Bilbro family’s ranch in the Yorkville Highlands. Dark red stone fruit, rose petal, mint, floral notes and spice are beautifully delineated. Intensely aromatic and pungent, but with no green edges, the 2014 offers tons of personality and character. Beams of mountain tannin add energy throughout. I would give the 2014 at least a year or two in bottle, as the tannins are imposing at this stage.
